Snow Hits Hungary: Weather Warnings Issued for Severe Conditions

The weather in northwestern Hungary has taken a significant turn, with temperatures dropping sharply on Thursday. Rainy and windy conditions have led to a growing need for umbrellas and raincoats across the region. At the top of Kendig Peak in the Kőszegi Mountains, temperatures have approached freezing, causing snowflakes to mix with the rainfall.
Severe Weather Conditions Ahead
This weather pattern is only the beginning. An intensifying precipitation zone is expected to bring heavy snowfall to the mountainous areas starting Thursday afternoon and evening. As a result, a thicker layer of snow could accumulate in elevated regions within the next 24 hours.
Widespread Impact of Temperature Drop
The cold snap is anticipated to reach lower areas soon. By late evening, plains may experience sleet or snowfall, adding to the weather challenges. In light of these conditions, the Hungarian Meteorological Service (HungaroMet) has issued a first-level (yellow) alert for several districts in western Transdanubia due to strong winds.
Warnings for Precipitation and Snowfall
- Second-level warnings are in effect for Vas, Győr-Moson-Sopron, and Veszprém counties due to heavy rain.
- Veszprém has issued a first-level warning specifically for the significant snowfall expected.
Residents are advised to remain cautious during this severe weather event as conditions are likely to worsen in the coming hours.
