Atkins expressed optimism regarding the trio’s rehabilitation. “We are really encouraged given the starting point,” he stated, highlighting the importance of each player’s recovery stage. All three athletes have different timelines for return but are progressing well.
Individual Recovery Updates
- Trey Yesavage: Recovering from a shoulder impingement, Yesavage has shown significant improvement. He recently demonstrated a boost in his velocity while throwing off a mound. Manager John Schneider confirmed his effectiveness in practice.
- Shane Bieber: Bieber is dealing with forearm fatigue and is expected to start throwing off a mound this week. His recovery will be closely monitored.
- Jose Berrios: Berrios is recovering from an elbow stress fracture and will also be throwing off a mound shortly.
Depth in the Starting Rotation
The Blue Jays took steps to strengthen their pitching depth during the off-season. However, injuries to key starters are testing that depth early in the season. As a result, the starting rotation will include:
- Kevin Gausman
- Dylan Cease
- Cody Ponce
- Eric Lauer
- Max Scherzer
In addition to the starters, the team announced eight relief pitchers for the Opening Day roster. The Blue Jays are set to kick off their season on Friday at Rogers Centre, facing the Oakland Athletics. Kevin Gausman will take the mound against veteran pitcher Luis Severino in the season opener.
