Greece: Beloved Singer Marinella Passes Away at 87

Marinella, the first representative of Greece at the Eurovision Song Contest, has passed away at the age of 87. She suffered a stroke in 2024 and had been facing various health challenges prior to her death.

Marinella: A Musical Icon

Kyriaki Papadopoulou, known as Marinella, was born on May 19, 1939, in Thessaloniki, northern Greece. Her artistic journey began early when she participated in the children’s radio show “Pediki Ora.” At just 17, she joined the artistic troupe of Mary Laurent, quickly rising to lead singer when the original vocalist fell ill, allowing her to showcase her talent across Greece.

Musical Breakthrough and Eurovision

In 1957, under the stage name Marinella, she released her debut single “Nitsa, Elenitsa.” During this time, she formed a prominent partnership with singer Stelios Kazantzidis, creating a duet that gained immense popularity and led them to appear in various films together. After their divorce in 1966, Marinella launched a successful solo career.

Marinella made history in 1974 as Greece’s first entrant in the Eurovision Song Contest. She performed the song “Krasi, thalassa kai t’agori mou,” securing an 11th place finish with 7 points.

Later Career Highlights

Throughout the decades, Marinella continued to perform and release music. Notably, she participated in the closing ceremony of the 2004 Summer Olympic Games in Athens.

Her final studio album, “Tipota den ginete tihea,” came out in 2005. Marinella remained active in her music career until a stroke on stage during a concert in 2024 at the Odeon of Herodes Atticus in Athens marked the end of her performances.
