NDP Convention Begins with New Federal Leader Selection on Agenda

Delegates are gathering in Winnipeg this weekend for the NDP Convention, focused on selecting a new federal leader. This meeting follows a distressing period for the New Democratic Party (NDP), marked by a significant decline in support. In the 2025 election, the NDP achieved its lowest share of the popular vote, resulting in only six seats in the House of Commons and the party losing its official status.

NDP Faces Existential Threat

The party’s recent history has been tumultuous. After the resignation of Jagmeet Singh, who lost his own riding in British Columbia, concerns about morale have surfaced among remaining members. Nunavut MP Lori Idlout’s recent switch to the Liberal Party has added to the challenges faced by the NDP.

Leadership Candidates

Five candidates are vying for leadership:

  • Avi Lewis, documentary filmmaker
  • Tanille Johnston, social worker
  • Rob Ashton, union leader
  • Tony McQuail, organic farmer
  • Heather McPherson, Alberta MP

Voting is currently in progress, with the leader expected to be announced on Sunday morning.

Polls Indicate Challenges Ahead

An Angus Reid poll released prior to the convention indicates that the new leader must enhance the party’s visibility. The survey of 1,164 Canadians who previously voted for the NDP revealed that:

  • 44% of respondents do not recognize any leadership candidates’ names
  • 24% view the party as “irrelevant”
  • 40% believe the party’s most impactful days are behind it

Shachi Kurl, president of Angus Reid Institute, emphasized the seriousness of these findings, noting that these individuals likely comprise a segment of potential NDP supporters.

Convention Atmosphere and Key Speakers

On the convention’s opening day, approximately 2,000 supporters attended. Manitoba Premier Wab Kinew, a highly regarded political figure, welcomed attendees, delivering a passionate speech that earned multiple standing ovations.

Kinew expressed optimism about the future of the NDP, stating, “In order for us to have a strong Canada, we need a strong federal NDP.” Meanwhile, Leah Gazan, an MP from Winnipeg, has publicly endorsed Avi Lewis, who is positioned as a front-runner.

Policy Debates and Member Growth

The NDP convention is set to discuss around 70 policy proposals addressing pressing national issues. Topics include:

  • Health care
  • Green energy initiatives
  • Labour issues
  • Affordability challenges
  • Foreign policy amidst global conflicts

In addition, the NDP reported over 100,000 registered members, marking a 67% increase since the leadership race began last year. The party is also celebrating record levels of fundraising for the leadership campaign.

The NDP Convention is a critical moment for the party as it grapples with its future direction and aims to reconnect with its base. The new leadership will be pivotal in shaping the NDP’s path forward.
