Verstappen Reflects on Q2 Exit in Japan: Struggles with Car Issues

Max Verstappen faced significant challenges during Qualifying for the Japanese Grand Prix, ultimately recording a disappointing exit in Q2. The driver from the Netherlands has had remarkable success at the Suzuka Circuit, winning the previous four races. However, this time he will start from position 11 in the upcoming 53-lap race.

Performance Challenges in Qualifying

During the qualifying session, Verstappen missed out on advancing to Q3 by just two-tenths of a second. He was outpaced by rookie Arvid Lindblad and his Red Bull teammate Isack Hadjar. The four-time World Champion also lagged 1.2 seconds behind the fastest time, set by Mercedes’ Kimi Antonelli.

Season Struggles

This qualifying setback continues a rough start to the season for Verstappen. In the previous rounds, he failed to secure any points in both the China Sprint and the Chinese Grand Prix, where he retired due to a technical issue. His highest qualifying position this season was eighth in China, while his best race finish so far has been sixth.

Verstappen’s Reflections

  • Verstappen described the qualifying session as “very difficult.”
  • He struggled with car balance issues, specifically mid-corner rotation.
  • He acknowledged that the team thought they made improvements during Free Practice 3 (FP3).

After the session, Verstappen candidly remarked, “Just sliding a lot but also not having the rotation mid-corner everywhere makes it quite a complicated balance. It’s not ideal around here.”

Tackling the Car Issues

When questioned about the possibility of experimenting with various setups to improve performance, Verstappen pointed out the challenges posed by the new car regulations. He emphasized that the current issues are more significant than those experienced last year.

  • “We have bigger problems than what we had last year,” he stated.
  • Some components of the car are not functioning as expected.

As the race approaches, it remains to be seen how Verstappen and the Red Bull team will address these ongoing challenges.
