Michigan Names Wood Duck as Official State Bird

The wood duck has officially been named Michigan’s state bird, a move celebrated by wildlife enthusiasts and residents alike. This designation was made official when Governor Gretchen Whitmer signed House Bill 4044 into law.

Legislative Journey

The bill, introduced by Representative Alabas Farhat (D-Dearborn), made its way through the legislative process with significant support. It first passed in the House in June and subsequently cleared the Senate on March 25.

About the Wood Duck

The wood duck, scientifically known as Aix sponsa, was once abundant across North America. However, its population faced serious declines in the late 19th century due to hunting pressures and habitat loss, particularly in nesting areas. Despite these challenges, the wood duck’s habitat extends into Michigan, making it a fitting choice for the state’s official bird.

State Symbols of Michigan

Michigan is known for its unique array of state symbols, which reflect the region’s natural heritage and culture. These symbols include:

  • State Bird: American Robin
  • State Fish: Brook Trout
  • State Tree: White Pine

This addition of the wood duck to Michigan’s list of official symbols underscores the state’s commitment to wildlife conservation and appreciation of its natural beauty.
