Hidalgo Sets Record for Single-Season Steals in Notre Dame’s Sweet 16 Win

In a remarkable performance, Notre Dame guard Hannah Hidalgo has set a new NCAA Division I single-season record for steals during the Sweet 16 matchup against Vanderbilt. Hidalgo’s exceptional game featured a triple-double of 31 points, 11 rebounds, and 10 steals, propelling the Irish to a hard-fought 67-64 victory.

Historic Steal Records Broken

With her 10 steals, Hidalgo not only surpassed the previous single-season mark of 192 steals, held by Lamar’s Chastadie Barrs from the 2018-19 season but also broke the NCAA tournament record for total steals. This new tournament record of 24 steals overtakes the former record of 23 steals established by Ticha Penicheiro in 1988 and Emily Engstler in 2022.

Game Highlights

  • Hidalgo accumulated seven steals in the first half.
  • She reached nine steals by the end of the third quarter.
  • This game marked her third in which she recorded at least eight steals during the NCAA tournament.

Advancing to the Elite Eight

With this victory, Notre Dame advances to the Elite Eight, where they will compete against the winner of the North Carolina vs. UConn matchup. Hidalgo’s performance was crucial for the Irish, showcasing her skill and determination throughout the game.

Award-Winning Season

Hidalgo’s season has been defined by accolades. She has earned both the ACC Player of the Year and ACC Defensive Player of the Year honors. Additionally, she holds the ACC single-season steals record and the Notre Dame career record for steals, becoming the only player in school history to surpass 400 steals.

Supporting Players

Cassandre Prosper contributed significantly to the team’s efforts, scoring 15 points in the Sweet 16 victory. Despite a strong performance from Vanderbilt’s Mikayla Blakes, who led her team with 26 points and eight rebounds, Notre Dame’s defense proved insurmountable.

Hidalgo’s achievements not only highlight her individual talents but also strengthen Notre Dame’s position as a formidable contender in this year’s NCAA tournament.
