Ogden Council Urges ICE Office Review and Inspection

In Ogden, two city council members are advocating for a review and inspection of the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) office amid concerns from the community. This discussion arose during a recent council meeting where residents expressed their fears over the agency’s activities, particularly regarding illegal immigration enforcement.
Call for Review of ICE Office
Councilwoman Alicia Washington and Councilman Kevin Lundell are leading the push for inspections. They seek to ensure that the ICE office at 2487 S. 1620 West complies with all city codes and regulations. Washington emphasized the council’s role in oversight and advocated for continuing discussions about the office’s operations.
Community Concerns
Residents have raised serious concerns. They allege that the ICE office has violated its conditional use permit by operating outside approved hours and holding detainees overnight on 18 occasions. Washington noted that these accusations need thorough investigation and transparency from the city administration.
- Location of ICE Office: 2487 S. 1620 West
- Alleged permit violations: Operating outside permitted hours
- Overnight detentions: 18 reported instances
Response from City Officials
In light of these concerns, Councilman Lundell has requested fire officials to inspect the facility, particularly following claims of hazardous materials used within the office. Additionally, Washington called for a health inspector to ensure compliance with health codes.
Mayor Ben Nadolski’s office, represented by Chief Administrative Officer Mara Brown, refuted the community’s claims. Brown stated that the allegations regarding overnight detentions were not substantiated, suggesting that detainees are instead transferred to county jails.
Divided Opinions on ICE Presence
The council members’ views highlight a division within the community regarding ICE’s activities. While some residents express alarm over the agency’s perceived overreach, others support its presence and the enforcement of immigration laws. Councilman Ken Richey noted that many in the community are “excited about ICE” and that the council’s powers are limited regarding the agency’s operations.
This ongoing dialogue in Ogden showcases the complexities surrounding immigration enforcement and the community’s response to federal authority. Council members plan to reconvene to further discuss the operation of the ICE office and necessary oversight measures.
