Tenby Seeks Solutions for Crackwell Street Closure

Local authorities in Tenby are actively working on solutions to manage traffic flow as Crackwell Street remains closed. This closure, initially anticipated to last for four weeks, has been extended significantly due to serious structural problems identified in a nearby building.

Extended Closure of Crackwell Street

Crackwell Street’s closure coincides with the busy Easter holiday season. The Pembrokeshire County Council has announced that the road closure will last approximately eight additional weeks, affecting traffic movement in the area.

Challenges from Increased Traffic

Cllr Michael Williams, representing Tenby’s North ward, has expressed concerns regarding rising traffic levels. He suggested closing parking spaces outside the Market Hall on High Street to help alleviate congestion. Traffic has been significantly impacted, particularly along Tudor Square and High Street.

  • Crackwell Street closure causes traffic increase on surrounding roads.
  • Potential structural issues on High Street raised by Cllr Williams.
  • Heavy vehicles often exceeding weight restrictions in the town center.

Community Response

Cllr Sam Skyrme-Blackhall, from Tenby’s South Ward, has also been in discussions with council officers. She acknowledges the frustration of residents and visitors due to the heavy congestion caused by the closure. Ongoing communication with senior officers aims to explore effective measures to manage this situation.

She has also proposed keeping certain areas free of parked vehicles, enhancing traffic flow during peak times. The engagement from local businesses and residents is appreciated and will be considered during planning.

Reason for Road Closure

Pembrokeshire County Council issued a Public Notice earlier this year, announcing the need for maintenance works on Goscar House. This includes repositioning a Mechanical Ventilation with Heat Recovery (MVHR) unit and additional construction to enhance storage. However, unforeseen structural concerns necessitated this extended closure.

Future of Crackwell Street

The council’s spokesperson confirmed that the current closure may remain in effect for a maximum of 18 months if unexpected issues arise. The traffic order restricts all vehicles, with certain exemptions, along the affected section of Crackwell Street.

For the time being, alternative routes for traffic include Bridge Street, St Julian’s Street, Tudor Square, and High Street. As the council works to address these challenges, they remain committed to ensuring public safety and effective traffic management in Tenby.
