Atkins Clarifies Blue Jays’ Choice of Schneider Over Jimenez

The Toronto Blue Jays recently faced a challenging roster decision before the start of the 2024 MLB season. General manager Ross Atkins had to finalize a 26-player roster after the team’s successful run to the World Series last year.

Roster Cuts: Jimenez vs. Schneider

One of the most difficult decisions involved infielder Leo Jimenez and fan favorite Davis Schneider. Atkins remarked on the complexity of designating Jimenez for assignment, highlighting his capability to impact a major-league team significantly. He stated, “The decision to DFA Leo is a very difficult one because he’s a very good player that provided another layer for us.”

In 81 games over his major-league career, Jimenez posted a batting average of .207 and a .635 OPS, alongside five home runs. Despite showing solid defensive skills during spring training, he managed only a .231 batting average and a .541 OPS in 14 games this spring.

The Case for Schneider

In contrast, the performance of Davis Schneider made a compelling case for his place on the roster. With a career batting average of .217 and a .736 OPS, Schneider has hit 32 home runs across three seasons with the Blue Jays. Atkins expressed confidence in Schneider, stating that he “earned this right” to remain part of the team. Schneider’s ability to contribute in the outfield also played a significant role in the decision-making process.

  • Leo Jimenez: .207 batting average, .635 OPS, 5 home runs in 81 games.
  • Davis Schneider: .217 batting average, .736 OPS, 32 home runs over three seasons.

Organizational Depth and Moving Forward

Atkins noted the organizational depth in the minors, suggesting that prospects like Kasevich performed well in spring training. He emphasized that the team is prepared and actively seeking further depth in the infield. “We feel that we’re covered, but we’re never gonna stop working and trying to have a little bit more depth there,” he added.

Spencer Miles Secures Bullpen Spot

Another notable decision was the inclusion of right-handed pitcher Spencer Miles, a recent Rule 5 Draft pick. Atkins described the choice as “pretty straightforward,” highlighting Miles’ potential and performance. The 25-year-old has made a strong impression in spring training, pitching 9.2 innings with a 3.72 ERA and 11 strikeouts.

Miles was selected from the San Francisco Giants in December and competed with fellow righty Chase Lee for a bullpen spot. Ultimately, Lee was optioned to triple-A, allowing Miles to solidify his place on the roster.

2024 Season Opener

The Blue Jays are set to kick off their season with a game against the Athletics. As the team prepares for the challenges ahead, all eyes will be on how the roster changes impact their performance on the field.
