Concerning Early Hurricane Season Trend Predicted

AccuWeather has released its initial outlook for the 2026 hurricane season, predicting a potentially average year for storm activity. The forecast highlights the significance of warm ocean temperatures and anticipates the arrival of a strong El Niño, which may influence the dynamics of this year’s hurricane season.

2026 Hurricane Season Forecast

The Atlantic hurricane season officially begins on June 1, just 68 days from now. AccuWeather’s seasonal forecast, published on March 25, outlines the following predictions:

  • 11 to 16 named storms
  • 4 to 7 hurricanes
  • 2 to 4 major hurricanes (Category 3 or higher)
  • 3 to 5 direct impacts on the U.S.

Impact of El Niño

Forecasters anticipate that the El Niño phenomenon, expected to emerge by late summer, could limit storm activity. Historically, El Niño events reduce the number of tropical storms in the Atlantic by impacting trade winds.

However, significant storms have still occurred during El Niño years. For instance, Hurricane Michael in 2018 and Hurricane Andrew in 1992 were both catastrophic despite El Niño’s influence. Craig Fugate, a former FEMA administrator, cautions that El Niño does not eliminate risk. “Prepare the same every year, because it only takes one storm,” he emphasized.

Concerns Over Warm Ocean Temperatures

This season, unusually warm sea surface temperatures are raising concerns over potential rapid storm intensification. Already elevated in some areas, these temperatures could lead to more dangerous conditions closer to U.S. shores.

Alex DaSilva, the lead hurricane expert at AccuWeather, noted that warmer waters create an environment conducive to storm formation. “If water temperatures remain above historical averages, it’s a recipe for rapid intensification,” he warned, recalling how Hurricane Michael intensified dramatically just before landfall.

2025 Hurricane Season Recap

The previous season, 2025, stood out as the first in a decade without a hurricane making landfall in the U.S. However, it still produced three Category 5 hurricanes, including Hurricane Melissa, which resulted in over 95 fatalities across Jamaica and the Caribbean. The season produced:

  • 13 named storms
  • 5 hurricanes
  • 4 major hurricanes
