South Western Railway Retires Class 455 Trains After 43 Years

The Class 455 trains have officially been retired by South Western Railway after 43 years of service. These trains have become a familiar sight on various commuter routes in the UK.

Farewell Tours and Community Support

To mark the retirement, farewell tours were organized, attracting more than 900 participants. The tours were a hit, leading to the addition of a second train after initial tickets sold out in just 15 seconds. The event successfully raised profits that were shared among Macmillan, The Alex Wardle Foundation, and Railway Children.

Class 455 Features and Transition

During their operational years, Class 455 trains served routes in Surrey, Berkshire, Hampshire, and south-west London, traveling to London Waterloo. These trains were known for important features including:

  • Wi-Fi connectivity
  • Accessible toilets
  • Increased capacity for passengers

Despite entering service five years later than initially planned, the Class 455s played a vital role in daily commutes.

Looking Ahead: New Trains

As the Class 455 trains retire, South Western Railway has introduced Arterio trains. These modern replacements promise enhanced travel experiences for commuters. With improved facilities and timely service, they aim to set a new standard in rail travel.
