A young Iberian lynx has triumphed by winning the 2026 Wildlife Photographer of the Year People’s Choice Award. The captivating photograph, named “Flying Rodent,” was captured by Austrian photographer Josef Stefan during a two-week visit to Torre de Juan Abad, located in Spain’s Ciudad Real province.
About the Winning Photograph
Stefan spent several days waiting in a hide when the young lynx appeared with its prey. The lynx engaged in an impressive display, throwing the rodent into the air and catching it repeatedly. This remarkable behavior lasted nearly 20 minutes.
At one point, the lynx stood on its hind legs, seemingly captivated by the sight of its prey. Stefan remarked that it looked as though the rodent could fly. The playful moment ended when the lynx lost interest and took its catch behind a bush to eat.
The Iberian Lynx: A Conservation Success Story
The Iberian lynx is one of the rarest wildcats in the world. In the early 2000s, the population dwindled to fewer than 100 individuals, nearing extinction. Through extensive conservation and reintroduction programs, the numbers have now increased to over 2,000. However, this species remains classified as vulnerable by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN).
Wildlife Photographer of the Year Awards
This year, the Wildlife Photographer of the Year People’s Choice Award received a record 85,917 votes from fans of nature photography worldwide. The nominated images showcased exceptional talent, with five finalists being highly commended.
