Providence Appoints South Florida’s Hodgson as New Head Coach

Providence College has appointed Bryan Hodgson as its new head coach for men’s basketball, marking a significant change for the program. This decision was announced on Sunday and comes after the dismissal of Kim English, who led the team for three years.

Leadership Change at Providence

Kim English, who compiled a record of 48 wins and 52 losses during his tenure, could not secure an NCAA Tournament appearance. Athletic Director Steve Napolillo expressed optimism about Hodgson’s ability to restore the program’s competitive edge.

“Today we begin a new journey with Providence College men’s basketball,” said Napolillo. “I knew we needed a coach who would fit with our academic institution.”

Hodgson’s Impressive Track Record

Hodgson joins Providence after a successful season at the University of South Florida. Under his leadership, the Bulls achieved a remarkable 25-9 record, winning the American Conference championship. This success earned them a No. 11 seed in the NCAA Tournament, although they faced an early exit against Louisville.

  • Hodgson’s South Florida Highlights:
  • 25-9 overall record in the recent season
  • American Conference Championship winner
  • First NCAA Tournament berth since 2012
  • Ranked 48th in KenPom’s adjusted efficiency
  • Ninth in points per game among Division I programs

Previous Coaching Experiences

Before leading South Florida, Hodgson was the head coach at Arkansas State, achieving a 45-28 record over two years. His background also includes a significant stint as an assistant coach at Alabama from 2019 to 2023 under Nate Oats.

A Vision for the Future

As Hodgson takes the helm at Providence, his mission is clear. He aims to energize the team and bring them back to championship contention and NCAA tournament relevance. His experience reviving programs at both South Florida and Arkansas State offers a promising outlook for the Friars’ future in college basketball.
