N.S. Schools Close Early Amid Heavy Snowfall

Heavy snowfall has caused early school closures in various regions of Nova Scotia. On Monday, several school districts announced changes due to unsafe weather conditions.

School Closures Due to Severe Weather

The South Shore Regional Centre for Education closed all its schools entirely. In contrast, the Tri-County Regional Centre for Education closed schools specifically in Shelburne County. A notable situation occurred in the Cape Breton-Victoria Regional Centre for Education, where nearly all schools dismissed students one hour early, except those north of Smokey.

Bus Operations and Early Dismissals

  • In the Annapolis Valley Regional Centre for Education, bus drivers assessed road conditions and decided on safety measures.
  • Several schools in the Strait Regional Centre for Education followed a similar pattern, with early dismissals announced for multiple institutions.
  • Classes at St. Mary’s Education Centre and Fanning Education Centre/Canso Academy were canceled due to the inclement weather.

Weather Conditions Overview

The severe winter storm, which began on Sunday evening, was expected to persist throughout Monday. Meteorologists projected snowfall totals between 10 to 20 centimeters in various locations.

Wind and Snow Forecast

According to CBC meteorologist Ryan Snoddon, gusty northeasterly winds reaching speeds of 50 to 70 km/h contributed to dangerous driving conditions. Some areas, particularly Antigonish, Guysborough, and Cape Breton, could experience wind gusts between 70 to 80 km/h.

As the storm progressed, the snow was expected to taper off into flurries throughout Monday evening. However, lingering flurries could persist along the Northumberland Shore and into Cape Breton throughout the night and Tuesday morning.
