UK and French Forces Seize Russian ‘Shadow Fleet’ Tanker in Mediterranean

The UK and French military forces have collaborated in the Mediterranean to apprehend an oil tanker linked to Russia’s shadow fleet. The operation focused on a Mozambique-flagged vessel, the Deyna, which is accused of evading international sanctions against Russia. Equipped with advanced tracking capabilities, the British patrol boat HMS Cutlass provided crucial support during the operation near the Strait of Gibraltar.
Operation Details
Defence Secretary John Healey emphasized the significance of this operation, stating, “Disrupting, deterring, and degrading Russia’s shadow fleet is a priority for this government.” The Deyna is under sanctions by both the UK and the European Union for its involvement in transporting Russian oil.
Political Statements
French President Emmanuel Macron criticized vessels that evade sanctions, labeling them as “profiteers of war.” He reaffirmed the commitment to combating such activities, stating, “We will not allow it.” The tanker was reportedly carrying crude oil from Russia’s Murmansk port and was intercepted off the coast of Algeria.
Shipping Industry Concerns
The maritime tracking website, vesselfinder.com, indicated that the Deyna was on a course toward Port Said, Egypt, at the time of its interception. There are concerns within the shipping industry regarding the safety and maintenance of shadow fleet vessels, often categorized as aging tankers with questionable insurance.
Broader Context of Military Cooperation
This action is part of ongoing military cooperation between the UK and its allies. Earlier in the year, British forces assisted the US in the seizure of the oil tanker Marinera in the Atlantic. France also intercepted the sanctioned Grinch in the western Mediterranean.
Impact of Global Events
While European sanctions against Russia are still in effect, recent geopolitical shifts have led the US to temporarily ease sanctions on Russian oil sales. This adjustment is due in part to disruptions in oil supplies resulting from the ongoing conflict in the Middle East.
Moscow has condemned these seizures, characterizing them as acts of piracy targeting its assets.
