Flooding Intensifies on Oahu’s North Shore, Warns Gov. Josh Green
Severe flooding has hit Oahu’s North Shore, prompting emergency responses and evacuations. Governor Josh Green described the situation as “very serious” due to heavy rainfall causing dangerous flooding and rising water levels.
Evacuations and Emergency Measures
The City and County of Honolulu issued an evacuation order for specific areas on the North Shore. Notably, Haleiwa and Waialua are significantly affected. The warning was raised due to dangerously high water levels at the Wahiawa Dam.
As of early Friday morning, emergency management reported life-threatening flash floods across northern Oahu, with flooding particularly severe in the Haleiwa and Waialua regions. Governor Green reported that rainfall rates had temporarily decreased, but substantial runoff continued to keep water levels high.
Wahiawa Dam Water Levels
- The Wahiawa Dam water level was recorded at 84.73 feet.
- When water levels reach 85 feet, evacuations are triggered.
- Officials are monitoring the situation closely, as overflows could compromise the dam’s integrity.
Public Safety and Emergency Shelters
City officials urged residents to evacuate if possible and avoid driving through floodwaters. Emergency shelters have been established at Waialua High and Intermediate School. Additional staging areas are located at various schools and parks.
Emergency Services Coordination
All city agencies are working together from the Emergency Operations Center. Public safety is the top priority, and officials have advised residents to seek higher ground if they hear emergency sirens.
Continued Flooding Risks
Ongoing rainfall is expected to exacerbate flooding issues, particularly impacting the windward side of Oahu. Streams in Waiahole, Waikane, and Kahana remain at high levels, with potential continued flooding in low-lying areas.
National Guard and Coast Guard Involvement
The National Guard has been activated to assist with door-to-door checks with Honolulu police. High-water vehicles are deployed, and the Coast Guard is prepared for potential rescues.
Medical Concerns and Rescues
- Some residents suffering from hypothermia have been transported to Wahiawa Hospital.
- Rescue operations are underway, including individuals rescued from rooftops.
- Approximately 70 people at a North Shore campsite are currently safe but surrounded by flooding, complicating their exit.
Stay Informed and Prepared
Officials plan to keep the public informed with ongoing updates throughout the day. Residents are encouraged to take flash flood warnings seriously, particularly given the potential for dangerous runoff in other areas, such as Maui.
Staying connected with family and preparing basic supplies is crucial as conditions evolve. Emergency services remain vigilant as they respond to the impacts of this intense flooding on Oahu’s North Shore.
