Helmut Marko Bans Max Verstappen from Nordschleife Track

Helmut Marko recently discussed his decision to prevent Max Verstappen from using a Formula 1 car on the Nürburgring Nordschleife. The Dutch driver is set to compete at this legendary track again, driving a GT3 car as part of his team’s participation in the NLS2 event.
Verstappen’s Ambitious Plans
The Nürburgring Nordschleife, often referred to as ‘The Green Hell’, poses significant challenges for drivers. It has gained traction among motorsport enthusiasts and is a popular venue for endurance and GT racing. Verstappen, a four-time F1 champion, previously expressed interest in running a Red Bull F1 car on this iconic circuit.
Marko’s Concerns
Years ago, Verstappen approached Marko with excitement about the possibility of a demonstration run at the Nordschleife. Marko, who served as a former advisor to Red Bull, immediately raised concerns about safety. He recalled, “All alarm bells went off at that time.” The narrow, high-speed nature of the track, combined with its minimal run-off areas, prompted Marko to ban the idea outright.
Record Lap Inspiration
Verstappen’s interest in achieving a record lap was fueled by Timo Bernhard’s impressive 2018 achievement in a Porsche 919 Hybrid Evo. This record lap is considered one of the greatest feats at the Nordschleife, illustrating the high-performance standards Verstappen hoped to match.
Current Projects
Although barred from pursuing his ambitious F1 run, Verstappen has found joy in competing at the Nordschleife in a Mercedes GT3 car. Marko acknowledged this adaptation, stating, “Fortunately, he can now enjoy himself on the Nordschleife.”
Legacy of a Competitive Spirit
Despite the change in vehicle, Marko noted that Verstappen likely still has Timo Bernhard’s lap record in mind. His competitive nature aligns with his “old school” racing spirit. As Verstappen continues to race at this challenging venue, the legacy of his ambitions remains a significant part of his career.
