ARC Ends Drop Box System for Income Tax Returns

The Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) recently announced significant changes regarding the drop box system for income tax returns. After the upcoming tax period, the agency will remove numerous drop boxes currently available across the nation.
Details on the Drop Box System Changes
As of now, there are still 45 drop boxes in operation. These boxes allow Canadians to submit their income tax returns and payments. However, the CRA reported a notable decline in their usage. The number of documents deposited through these boxes has dropped by 78% over the last six years, with approximately 430,000 submissions expected for the 2024-2025 period.
Issues with Drop Box Usage
In addition to declining usage, several issues have been identified concerning drop boxes:
- Processing delays for documents submitted.
- Security concerns including break-ins and vandalism.
Transition to Electronic Submissions
The last day to use the drop boxes will be May 28. After this date, taxpayers must transition to different methods for submitting their income tax returns and payments. Alternative options include:
- Electronic filing through CRA’s online services
- Mailing submissions via Canada Post
- In-person payments at Canada Post outlets
The ongoing tax season for 2025 will conclude on April 30 for most individuals. Taxpayers are encouraged to adapt to these new measures to ensure their filings are completed in a timely manner.
