UK’s Top 2025 Tourist Attraction Surpasses British Museum

In a remarkable achievement for the Natural History Museum, it has surpassed the British Museum to become the UK’s top tourist attraction in 2025. This milestone was celebrated by Dr. Doug Gurr, the museum’s director, who expressed pride in the museum’s exceptional visitor figures.

Record Visitor Numbers

The Natural History Museum welcomed an impressive 7.1 million visitors last year. Dr. Gurr highlighted the importance of these numbers, stating they reflect the museum’s commitment to providing an outstanding visitor experience. He also praised the dedicated team behind the scenes who create memorable exhibitions.

Engagement with Cultural Attractions

The figures from the Association of Leading Visitor Attractions (ALVA) reveal the public’s strong interest in exploring the UK’s cultural venues. In total, the 409 sites monitored by ALVA reached 165 million visits, a 2% increase from the previous year. However, this number still falls short of the 170 million visits recorded in 2019, before the Covid pandemic.

Other Popular Attractions

Several other renowned attractions also recorded significant visitor numbers last year:

  • Royal Museums Greenwich
  • National Museum of Scotland
  • Royal Botanic Gardens Kew
  • Royal Shakespeare Company, London
  • Edinburgh Castle
  • National Galleries Scotland

Each of these venues welcomed over 2 million visitors, highlighting the UK’s rich cultural landscape.

Top-Tier Visitor Venues

Additionally, several iconic sites made it into the top 20 attractions, each drawing more than 1.5 million visitors:

  • Royal Albert Hall
  • Westminster Abbey
  • Barbican Centre
  • National Portrait Gallery

This impressive array of cultural sites showcases the diverse interests of visitors to the UK. The surge in engagement reflects an enduring public fascination with art, history, and nature.
