Adrian Newey: Reviewing Past Aston Martin F1 Team Bosses

Aston Martin has announced a significant leadership change within its Formula 1 team, with Jonathan Wheatley stepping in as the new team principal. This transition follows Adrian Newey’s decision to step down from the role, marking his return to his previous position within the team.

Adrian Newey: Reviewing Past Aston Martin F1 Team Bosses

This leadership change represents the fifth team principal for Aston Martin since its entry into Formula 1 in 2021. Here’s a look at the previous team principals and their tenures.

1. Otmar Szafnauer (2021)

Otmar Szafnauer was the first team principal when Aston Martin rebranded from Racing Point. He successfully guided the team through its transition, leading them to a seventh-place finish in the 2021 Constructors’ Championship. Szafnauer’s departure was announced in early January 2022, following the hiring of Martin Whitmarsh as CEO. After leaving Aston Martin, he took up a position with Alpine.

2. Mike Krack (2022-2024)

Mike Krack succeeded Szafnauer to become the second team principal. His tenure saw the establishment of a new technical campus in Silverstone, along with improved on-track performances, notably by driver Fernando Alonso. The team achieved a fifth-place finish in the Constructors’ standings in 2024. Krack was ultimately reassigned to the role of chief trackside officer after three years.

3. Andy Cowell (2025)

In 2025, Andy Cowell, formerly with Mercedes, took the helm as team principal. He claimed his role signified a natural evolution in Aston Martin’s long-term strategy. Despite promising statements, Cowell led the team to a seventh-place finish that season. November 2025 saw him transition to oversee a new partnership with Honda, allowing for Newey’s appointment as team principal.

4. Adrian Newey (2026)

Adrian Newey’s short-lived tenure as team principal began amid significant challenges. Under his leadership, the team faced multiple technical issues related to the Honda power unit, which struggled to complete races. Newey’s return to a technical role will enable him to focus on engineering aspects, an area where he excels.

With each leadership change, Aston Martin aims to build a competitive team in Formula 1, reflecting owner Lawrence Stroll’s vision. As Jonathan Wheatley takes charge, the team looks to overcome challenges and enhance its performance on the grid.
