The WNBA and its players’ union have reached a tentative agreement on a new collective bargaining agreement (CBA). This significant development occurred early Wednesday morning after extensive negotiations. Both sides will finalize specific terms over the coming weeks before presenting the agreement for ratification by the players and approval from the league’s governance.
Key Elements of the New CBA
WNBA Commissioner Cathy Engelbert emphasized the importance of the agreement, stating that it marks a transformative step for both players and the league. The deal is expected to bring substantial advancements in several areas:
- Increased player salaries, with some players likely earning over a million dollars.
- A significant rise in the salary cap, proposed to be four times higher than the previous season.
- Improvements in facilities, staffing, and overall support for players.
The CBA reflects the league’s rapid growth, with increasing attendance and viewership numbers, as well as heightened stakeholder investment.

Union President Nneka Ogwumike stated that this agreement will tie player salaries to a more meaningful share of league revenue. This change aims to enhance average player compensation, which is now projected to exceed half a million dollars.

Negotiation Process
The agreement was achieved after intense negotiations lasting over 100 hours. These discussions unfolded over eight days, culminating in an agreement around 2:20 a.m. on Wednesday after a rigorous 10-hour session on Tuesday.
This agreement follows a prolonged period of tension, as the players previously opted out of their previous CBA 17 months ago due to disparity in compensation relative to their contributions. Alysha Clark, a member of the union executive committee, noted the significant growth of the league and its lack of reflection in player compensation.
Looking Ahead
The forthcoming CBA is expected to be a catalyst for further developments within the league. The WNBA plans to hold an expansion draft for new teams in Toronto and Portland. Additionally, over 80% of players are free agents this off-season, necessitating team negotiations.
Training camps are scheduled to open on April 19, just six days after the college draft, paving the way for the league’s season to commence on May 8.
