Yanbu Under Attack: Gulf’s Sole Oil Gateway Amid Hormuz Closure

Recent aerial strikes have affected the SAMREF refinery in Yanbu, Saudi Arabia, highlighting tensions in the Gulf region. This facility, a key oil processing site, is a joint venture between Saudi Aramco and ExxonMobil. Although the refinery experienced minimal damage, the strike has raised concerns about the stability of oil supplies amid escalating conflicts.
Yanbu: A Critical Oil Gateway
Yanbu Port serves as one of two vital export outlets for crude oil in the Gulf. The other significant outlet is the port of Fujairah in the United Arab Emirates. Since late September, Iran has effectively restricted access to the Strait of Hormuz, a critical passage that transports about 20% of the world’s oil. This maneuver has resulted in a notable energy crisis, affecting global oil supplies.
The Impact of Regional Conflicts
Iran’s recent military actions came in response to Israeli strikes targeting its energy infrastructure, including the South Pars gas field. Following these incidents, Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) issued evacuation warnings for oil facilities across Saudi Arabia, the UAE, and Qatar. The danger of further missile attacks was underscored by reports of attacks on key locations:
- Qatar’s LNG processing site at Ras Laffan sustained “extensive damage” due to Iranian missile strikes.
- Saudi Arabia intercepted four ballistic missiles aimed at Riyadh.
- The UAE temporarily halted operations at the Habshan gas facility after a drone attack.
Saudi Arabia has reacted strongly, asserting its right to respond militarily to perceived threats from Iran. In his statements, Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan condemned Iran’s actions as deliberate aggressions against its neighbors.
A Glimpse at Global Oil Supply chains
The Gulf region, encompassing Iraq and Iran, contributes significantly to the world’s energy resources, producing 31% of global oil and between 8% to 17% of natural gas. With ongoing tensions and disruptions, experts warn that the situation may lead to further complications in global energy markets.
As the situation unfolds, the global community watches closely, particularly as key players in the region navigate the delicate balance of power and economic stability in an increasingly volatile environment.
