Pakistan Strikes Militant Hideouts in Kandahar Amid Ongoing Clashes

Pakistan has intensified its military operations against militant hideouts in Afghanistan’s Kandahar region. This escalation comes amid ongoing clashes that began late last month. The recent conflict marks one of the deadliest periods between Pakistan and Afghanistan.
Details of the Latest Attacks
On Sunday, Pakistani forces targeted facilities in Kandahar, striking equipment storage and technical support structures. These operations were confirmed by Information Minister Attaullah Tarar, who reported overnight airstrikes.
Response from Afghanistan
Afghan officials, including spokesman Zabiullah Mujahid, reported that the strikes hit two locations. One was a site used by security guards, which was empty at night. The other was a drug rehabilitation center that incurred minor damage. Mujahid stated there were no reported casualties, yet described Pakistan’s actions as an invasion that exacerbates the conflict.
Reciprocal Hostilities
In response to Pakistan’s attacks, Afghanistan’s Defense Ministry claimed it launched an assault on a Pakistani army camp in South Waziristan. Afghan sources suggested the attack destroyed much of the camp’s command center and resulted in significant casualties among Pakistani troops. However, Pakistan dismissed these claims as propaganda.
Cross-Border Tensions
Both nations have exchanged accusations regarding cross-border hostilities. Afghanistan purportedly conducted operations from Kunar and Nangarhar provinces, alleging to have captured a Pakistani post and inflicted military casualties. Pakistan, on the other hand, asserts that the Taliban government in Afghanistan is sheltering militant groups that conduct attacks within its territory.
Background of the Conflict
This renewed violence traces back to late February when Afghanistan retaliated against Pakistani airstrikes purported to have targeted civilians. The clashes disrupted a ceasefire agreement brokered by Qatar in October of the previous year, which had successfully quelled hostilities that claimed numerous lives.
Civilian Impact
On the same day as the latest strikes, a mortar shell launched from Afghanistan destroyed a home in Bajaur, Pakistan, leading to the deaths of at least four family members and injuring two others. Both governments have accused each other of endangering civilian lives during this conflict.
Official Statements
Pakistan’s President Asif Ali Zardari condemned Afghanistan’s drone attacks on civilian areas, indicating that a “red line” had been crossed. Following his statements, Pakistan reportedly targeted an Afghan drone facility in retaliation.
As the situation escalates, regional stability hangs in the balance, with both sides engaging in a cycle of attack and counterattack. The ongoing clashes and targeted operations signal a deteriorating relationship between Pakistan and Afghanistan.
