Ex-Team Gushue Stars Launch New Alberta-Based Squad

Brendan Bottcher and Geoff Walker, prominent figures previously associated with Team Gushue, have announced the formation of a new curling team based in Alberta. The decision, revealed on social media, marks a significant shift for the duo as they prepare to return to their roots.
New Beginnings for Bottcher and Walker
Joining Bottcher and Walker are brothers Jacob and Tanner Horgan, former champions from Northern Ontario. In this new configuration, Bottcher will take on the role of skip, while Walker will handle lead stones.
A Stellar Track Record
Both players have impressive credentials. Walker spent 15 seasons with Brad Gushue’s team and qualified for the Brier every year. He contributed to six Brier championships and won an Olympic bronze medal in 2022. Additionally, Walker participated in 14 Grand Slam of Curling championships.
Bottcher’s resume is equally remarkable. He achieved three provincial championships as a skip in Alberta and led his team to a Brier championship in 2021, earning the title of Team Canada. In 2024-2025, he transitioned from skip to second, joining Gushue’s team.
The Alberta Curling Landscape
The emergence of the new Team Bottcher comes at a pivotal moment in Alberta curling. The reigning champion, Kevin Koe, has expressed uncertainty about his future, indicating he might not commit to another Olympic cycle. His third player, Tyler Tardi, has recently announced he will leave to join the remnants of Mike McEwen’s team in Saskatchewan.
Future Considerations for Team Gushue
This transition raises questions about the future of Mark Nichols, Gushue’s long-time third. Nichols has stated he will make no announcements until after the Brier, leaving fans eager for his decision. He and Gushue have partnered in curling since 1999, making their bond a significant part of the sport’s history in Canada.
