Endorsement for Fractional IPV Doses to Eradicate Polio

The World Health Organization’s Strategic Advisory Group of Experts on Immunization (SAGE) has made significant recommendations to combat polio. Their recent endorsement focuses on the use of fractional doses of the inactivated polio vaccine (IPV) and the broader deployment of novel oral polio vaccine type 2 (nOPV2). These measures aim to enhance vaccination efforts and address ongoing outbreaks.

Key Recommendations from SAGE

SAGE emphasized that the eradication of polio requires more than just technical solutions. Their recommendations are as follows:

  • Utilization of fractional doses of Sabin-based IPV, similar to the existing Salk-based IPV.
  • Wider rollout of the novel oral polio vaccine type 2 (nOPV2) to combat variant poliovirus type 2 (cVDPV2).

Addressing Ongoing Challenges

SAGE expressed deep concern over the persistent transmission of wild poliovirus type 1 (WPV1) in Pakistan and Afghanistan. Notably, Pakistan reported three new cases of WPV1 last week, indicating that the fight against this virus continues.

To effectively tackle these challenges, SAGE highlighted the importance of various factors:

  • Improving routine immunization coverage.
  • Implementing effective vaccination campaigns.
  • Enhancing surveillance and outbreak response.
  • Ensuring strong national political leadership and accountability.

Recommendations for Polio Vaccination in the United States

In the United States, the IPV remains the only polio vaccine available at clinics and pharmacies. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) advises that adults who have completed the standard polio vaccination series should consider receiving a single lifetime booster dose of IPV before traveling to high-risk areas.

Polio vaccination services continue to be accessible in the U.S., helping to safeguard public health against potential outbreaks.
