Rex Hoggard Reacts to Xander Schauffele’s Day Three at The Players Championship

Xander Schauffele has found himself in a challenging position as he heads into the final round of The Players Championship. After a disappointing third round at TPC Sawgrass, he is the only player in the top 15 to finish Saturday with an over-par score. Schauffele began the day in second place, having previously set up a strong position by hitting all 14 fairways on Friday.

Xander Schauffele’s Third Round Performance

During Saturday’s round, Schauffele struggled significantly. He carded a 74, with three bogeys and only one birdie. This performance has left him five shots behind the leader, Ludvig Aberg. His score caused him to lose over 2.5 shots to the field, raising questions about his chances.

Rex Hoggard’s Reaction

Following the third round, Rex Hoggard discussed Schauffele’s unexpected performance on the Golf Channel Podcast. He noted, “Xander’s day today really surprised me.” Hoggard expressed disbelief at Schauffele’s struggles, especially after such a strong showing the previous day.

Hoggard pointed out that Schauffele’s sharp decline was unexpected, given he hit all fairways on Friday. He speculated that while Aberg could falter, he had confidence in the leader’s consistency: “I just can’t figure out a way how it gets off.”

Future Possibilities for Schauffele

Despite the challenges, history suggests a five-shot comeback is possible at The Players Championship. Scottie Scheffler accomplished this feat in 2024 while trailing Schauffele. However, Hoggard is cautious about Schauffele’s potential comeback, stating, “I would be a little surprised about Xander [if he won].”

He reiterated that Schauffele is still adjusting to swing changes with coach Chris Como. Hoggard acknowledged the high expectations surrounding Schauffele but noted that he showed resilience by continuing to grind through his round. “The 74 was probably the best possible score he could have shot from some of the places he ended up with,” he said.

Looking Ahead

As the final round approaches, Schauffele will need a stellar performance to contend for the title. He must rely on the conditions to favor him and Aberg to show signs of struggle. Only then can Schauffele hope to replicate his previous rounds of 65 from the 2024 tournament, where he ultimately finished tied for second.

The stage is set for an exciting Sunday at TPC Sawgrass, and all eyes will be on Schauffele to see if he can make a dramatic comeback.
