Environment Canada Predicts Gusty Winds to Last Through Tuesday Morning

Environment Canada has issued a special weather statement for northern and central Ontario due to significant gusty winds. The advisory warns that these winds may last through Tuesday morning, impacting daily activities in Toronto and the surrounding Golden Horseshoe region.

Forecast for Gusty Winds

The agency anticipates wind gusts reaching up to 70 km/h late Sunday evening as easterly winds shift to southerly. On Monday, the wind direction will further change to southwesterly and then westerly, with gusts predicted to be between 70 to 90 km/h.

  • Sunday Late Afternoon/Evening: Gusts up to 70 km/h.
  • Monday: Gusts between 70 to 90 km/h.
  • Tuesday Morning: Winds expected to ease.

High winds may cause loose objects to be tossed about, and broken tree branches could lead to potential local utility outages. Residents are advised to secure any outdoor items and be cautious during this period.

Temperature Fluctuations Expected

As wind patterns shift, Toronto will experience temperature variations. Monday’s daytime high is forecasted to reach 12°C, with rain showers anticipated throughout the day. However, by noon, temperatures may drop due to the change in wind direction.

Dave Phillips, senior climatologist at Environment Canada, described the current weather as a type of “temperature whiplash.” He noted that conditions can vary significantly within short distances. Residents should be prepared for rapidly changing temperatures.

Spring Weather Outlook

The official start of spring is on Friday, but colder winter-like temperatures are expected to linger. The following week is projected to remain cool, with possible snow in late March and early April. Phillips indicated that spring may take longer to arrive this year.

Despite the slow onset of spring, summer is anticipated to bring warmer than normal temperatures. As residents navigate the remainder of winter, they can expect a gradual change as the season progresses.
