Washington Capitals Ink Top Rookie D Cole Hutson to Three-Year ELC

The Washington Capitals have officially signed top prospect Cole Hutson to a three-year entry-level contract. The announcement was made on Sunday, marking a significant milestone for the 19-year-old defenceman. Hutson was selected in the second round, 43rd overall, during the 2024 NHL Draft.

Cole Hutson’s Impressive NCAA Career

Hutson spent the 2023-2024 season with Boston University in the NCAA. His performance was stellar, as he led the Terriers in multiple key statistics:

  • Overtime goals (2)
  • Shots (148)
  • Plus-minus (+13)

As a sophomore, he ranked tied for fifth among NCAA defensemen in scoring at the end of the season. His exceptional play earned him a spot on the Hockey East First Team All-Star for the second consecutive year.

International Accomplishments

Hutson, the younger brother of NHL players Lane Hutson and Lars Hutson, has also made a significant impact internationally. He played for Team USA in the World Juniors for the past two years, showcasing his elite skills:

  • 2026: Served as alternate captain, recording 4 points in 3 games.
  • 2025: Helped USA win a gold medal, leading the tournament in points (11) and plus-minus (+11).

During the 2025 tournament, he set a new record for Team USA, becoming the highest-scoring defenceman in a single tournament and the first in World Junior Championship history to lead all players in scoring.
