Rory McIlroy Struggles as Scottie Scheffler Shines at TPC Sawgrass

At TPC Sawgrass, Scottie Scheffler and Rory McIlroy experienced contrasting performances during The Players Championship. As Scheffler aimed for his third title in four years, his initial struggles left him perilously close to missing the cut for the first time since 2022.
Scottie Scheffler’s Resilient Performance
Despite a challenging start, Scheffler managed to bounce back. After carding a second-round 73, he needed a final-hole birdie just to advance into the weekend with a score of one over par. His response in the third round was impressive; he shot a bogey-free 67, marked by five birdies, bringing his total score to four under par.
- Second Round Score: 73
- Third Round Score: 67
- Total After Three Rounds: 4 under par
- Birdies in Third Round: 5
Scheffler expressed satisfaction with his performance. “I felt I was swinging it better each day and hit more fairways,” he noted. He emphasized the importance of maintaining a positive attitude throughout the tournament.
Rory McIlroy’s Inconsistent Play
In stark contrast, McIlroy struggled to find his rhythm. His third-round score of level-par 72 left him at one over for the tournament. McIlroy’s putting was particularly disappointing, as he ranked last in strokes gained putting among those who made the cut, requiring 33 putts and only covering 61 feet on the greens.
- Third Round Score: 72
- Total After Three Rounds: 1 over par
- Putt Distance: 61 feet
- Putts Taken: 33
Former Ryder Cup player David Howell commented on McIlroy’s putting issues, saying, “He’s all at sea on the greens this week.” McIlroy’s overall game saw three birdies paired with three bogeys, resulting in another uninspiring round.
Looking Ahead
With the final round approaching, McIlroy aims to recover his form before the Masters next month. Scheffler, however, continues to focus on his game, reflecting on the progress made that week. “My attitude and commitment towards my shots have been solid,” he stated, expressing confidence as he moves forward in the tournament.
The final round of The Players Championship will be aired live on Sunday, featuring key groups and additional coverage on El-Balad.
