Natalie Wilkie: A Remarkable Athlete
Natalie Wilkie, 25, hails from Salmon Arm, British Columbia. She has had an outstanding performance at the Games, securing two gold medals and a total of four medals. Her achievements include gold in the Para biathlon women’s sprint pursuit standing final, contributing to her impressive medal tally of 11, which consists of five golds, three silvers, and three bronzes.
Wilkie is notably the first Canadian athlete to carry the flag for both the Opening and Closing Ceremonies at the same Paralympic Games. She expressed her surprise and excitement upon receiving the honor. Wilkie stated, “This has been a really special Games for me,” emphasizing the emotional significance of the experience.
Mark Ideson: Leadership in Wheelchair Curling
Mark Ideson, 49, from London, Ontario, has also made headlines at the Games. He led Canada’s wheelchair curling team to their fourth Paralympic title, marking their first victory since 2014. Under his leadership, the team completed the tournament undefeated, making history in the process.
Ideson has two gold medals and two bronze medals from previous Games, having made his Paralympic debut in 2014. He described carrying the Maple Leaf at the closing ceremony as “the biggest honour I could ever imagine.” Ideson acknowledged the hard work of his team and staff, highlighting their dedication in reaching this point.
