Canada Fails to Qualify for 2028 Olympic Baseball

Canada’s baseball team will not compete at the 2028 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles. The team failed to secure a spot after an unexpected turn in the World Baseball Classic (WBC).
2028 Olympics and the WBC
Canada’s baseball journey in the WBC ended in the quarterfinals. The tournament allowed for two teams from the Americas to qualify for the Olympics, excluding the host nation, the United States. Canada had advanced to the knockout stage alongside the Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, and Venezuela.
Key Events in the WBC
- Canada reached the second round of the WBC for the first time in 2026.
- In the quarterfinals, Canada lost to the United States.
- Puerto Rico was eliminated by Italy.
- Venezuela achieved an upset victory against Japan.
Despite having a slim chance at qualifying for the Olympics through a tiebreaker, Canada needed Puerto Rico and Venezuela to lose their matches. Puerto Rico’s defeat by Italy gave Canada some hope, but Venezuela’s win over Japan secured their place in the semifinals and the Olympics.
Future Olympic Qualification
Two more spots for the 2028 Olympics will be determined at the WBSC Premier12 tournament in 2027. The highest-placed Asian team and the top team from Europe or Oceania will each earn a berth.
The final qualifying spot will be contested in a six-team Olympic qualifier. This tournament is set to take place no later than March 2028 and will include:
- Two teams from the 2027 European Championship
- Two teams from the 2027 Asian Championship
- The African champion
- The highest-placed eligible team from the Oceania Championship
Canada’s Olympic History
Canada’s baseball team last participated in the Summer Olympics in 2008, finishing sixth in Beijing. They have previously placed fourth in the 2004 Athens Games and were part of the demonstration sports during the 1984 and 1988 Olympics.
With the 2028 Olympics just around the corner, Canadian baseball fans will have to wait longer for their national team to compete on the world stage again.
