Jane McDonald Reflects on First Marriage That “Never Should Have Happened”

Jane McDonald has reflected on her past relationships, highlighting her first marriage, which she believes “never should have happened.” In her memoir, *Let the Light In*, she candidly shares her experiences in love and the lessons learned.
First Marriage Reflections
Before her marriage to engineer Henrik Brixen, Jane was married to a drummer named Paul. She openly admits that their union was a mistake. Jane met Paul when his band performed at a venue called Pussycat, and they began dating shortly after.
At just 21 years old, Jane found herself moving into Paul’s flat, fully devoted to their relationship. She gave up her job at Casanova’s to be home for him when he returned from gigs. Despite her passion for performing, she ended up working in a call center for two years.
Traditional Ceremony
- Wedding: Traditional at a Spiritualist church
- Attire: Classic 1980s meringue dress
- Singing: Jane’s husband didn’t know about her musical talent until their wedding.
After their honeymoon, the couple attempted to pursue a career as a musical duo. However, Jane soon recognized that her dreams were sidelined by her marriage. She reflects, “I can only assume my self-esteem was floundering,” admitting she had settled for a life that didn’t fulfill her aspirations.
Lessons in Love
After six months of marriage, Jane realized she wanted a different life, acknowledging that Paul deserved better as well. Reflecting on the decision to leave, she expresses feelings of guilt about how their relationship ended. Jane remarks, “Sometimes the kindest thing to do is admit you made a mistake and walk away.”
Impact of the Loss of Eddie Rothe
Jane’s later relationship with Eddie Rothe, a former drummer for the Searchers, was the love of her life. They rekindled their romance in 2008 after dating in the 1980s. However, Eddie passed away from lung cancer in 2021, leaving Jane heartbroken.
In a recent interview, she spoke about the challenges of rebuilding her life after Eddie’s passing. “You just have to rebuild in the best way you can,” she emphasized, noting the importance of connecting with fans and understanding shared experiences of loss.
Jane McDonald’s journey through love has taught her valuable lessons. While her first marriage brought feelings of regret, her later relationship with Eddie remains a cherished memory that shapes her life today.
