Stretford Town Centre Revitalized, With More Developments Ahead

Stretford is undergoing a significant transformation aimed at revitalizing its town center through extensive regeneration projects. This initiative, led by Trafford Council in collaboration with Bruntwood Holdings, targets both economic growth and improved community facilities.
Revitalization Efforts
The regeneration efforts have already made a noticeable impact. King Street has reopened, transforming it into a vibrant high street and public square. With new businesses opening regularly, Stretford is slowly regaining its popularity.
- The new Northern Light cinema is set to open shortly.
- Improvements to The Kingsway now prioritize walking and cycling, reducing the road to two single lanes.
New Housing Developments
In addition to commercial developments, residential projects are also in progress. A total of 53 new homes are being constructed on the former Lacy Street car park, located near the revitalized King Street.
Planning documents reveal ambitious plans for further development. Phase 2 of the regeneration plan is advancing, which includes:
- Demolition of the now-closed Stretford Mall, which closed on February 27.
- Construction of 248 new homes in a single development.
- Creation of a public park in the cleared area.
Future Plans
Trafford Council is set to submit a planning application this month for the residential developments. The proposed homes will include:
- 120 one-bedroom flats
- 114 two-bedroom flats
- 14 three-bedroom flats
Construction is anticipated to begin in July 2027, pending planning approval. Completion is targeted for the end of 2029.
Phase 2 will also encompass more housing initiatives. Phase 2b aims to construct an additional 178 homes, focused on affordable housing. However, this part relies on external funding, and a grant application will be made to Homes England.
A Vision for Stretford
Ultimately, Trafford Council aspires to deliver over 750 new homes in the region, enhancing the community’s living conditions. The ongoing regeneration of Stretford town center is set to create a more inviting and functional space for residents and visitors alike.
