Ford Seeks Injunction to Halt Al-Quds Day Rally in Toronto

Ontario Premier Doug Ford has requested the provincial attorney general to pursue an injunction against the upcoming Al-Quds Day rally in Toronto, scheduled for Saturday. He emphasized that hate, violence, and intimidation are not acceptable in Canada. This announcement was made via a social media post on Friday.

Local Officials’ Response to the Al-Quds Day Rally

City councillors James Pasternak and Brad Bradford are also advocating for an injunction to prevent the rally. They have urged the city solicitors to take immediate legal action. Furthermore, they are calling on Toronto Mayor Olivia Chow to publicly denounce the event.

About Al-Quds Day

Al-Quds Day is promoted by its organizers in Toronto as a demonstration of support for Palestine. Social media posts related to the event indicate that participants will also advocate for peace and no war in Iran and Lebanon.

Police Preparations and Public Safety

In light of the rally, Toronto police are planning to enhance their presence in the area. The rally is set to commence at 3 p.m. outside the U.S. consulate on University Avenue, north of Queen Street West.

  • Police estimate around 3,000 attendees, though that number may rise due to current geopolitical tensions.
  • The city has recently experienced incidents of gunfire at three synagogues and the U.S. consulate.

Emergency management Superintendent Craig Young warned that anyone participating in violent acts or obstructing police will face strict legal repercussions. He urged both demonstrators and opponents to conduct themselves respectfully and within the law.
