Envoi Allen Targets Cheltenham Gold Cup at Festival

Envoi Allen, a standout horse trained by Gordon Elliott, has become a prominent contender for the prestigious Cheltenham Gold Cup. Having achieved remarkable success at the Cheltenham Festival, Allen has won three different races, solidifying his reputation as one of the most exciting jumpers in training.

Record at Cheltenham Festival

Envoi Allen is set to participate in his eighth consecutive Cheltenham Festival, a remarkable achievement. His previous wins include:

  • 2019 Champion Bumper
  • 2020 Ballymore Novices’ Hurdle
  • 2023 Ryanair Chase

With these victories, he joins an elite group of horses, including Bobs Worth and Tiger Roll, who have also won three different races at the Festival.

Early Career and Development

Envoi Allen was purchased for £400,000 after winning an Irish point-to-point race. He initially trained under Gordon Elliott and quickly established himself by winning all three bumpers in Ireland. Under jockey Jamie Codd, he maintained an unbeaten record, which continued into his hurdle career.

Transition to Fences

After a successful transition to fences, Allen again won all three of his races in Ireland, with a notable victory in the Drinmore at Fairyhouse. However, his first attempt at Cheltenham over fences didn’t go as planned, resulting in his first defeat, which significantly affected his confidence.

Recent Performances

Returning for the Ryanair Chase in 2023, Envoi Allen demonstrated exceptional jumping ability. He won the race by nearly three lengths, outperforming the favorite Shishkin. His consistent performances have kept him competitive in subsequent Festivals, finishing second and third in the Ryanair Chase in 2024.

Upcoming Gold Cup Challenge

As Envoi Allen prepares for the Gold Cup, he is scheduled to be ridden by Daragh O’Keeffe. His recent race strategy mirrors that of past seasons, emphasizing his effectiveness when well-rested. Despite this being his most challenging Festival task yet, trainer Henry de Bromhead remains optimistic about Allen’s potential for success.

De Bromhead expressed confidence in Envoi Allen, comparing his situation to last year’s underdog Bob Olinger. As anticipation builds for the Cheltenham Festival, all eyes will be on Envoi Allen as he aims to capture one of jump racing’s highest accolades.
