Hypnotherapist Prevails in Harrods Court Dispute Over £4,550 Cartier Refund

A mother has won a significant legal battle against Harrods, the luxury department store, regarding a refund for a Cartier bracelet. Georgia Romain, a hypnotherapist from Kingston upon Thames, sought a £4,550 refund after discovering that the Cartier “Love” bracelet she purchased online did not fit her wrist.
Legal Dispute with Harrods
After returning the bracelet, Harrods rejected her return. The store claimed that the item had been damaged, alleging scratches were present when it was sent back. The luxury retailer warned Ms. Romain that if she did not reclaim the bracelet within 30 days, it would be moved to their lost property.
Court Ruling
Romain decided to pursue her case without legal representation. The case was presented at London’s Mayor and City County Court, where Deputy District Judge Elaine Vignoli ruled in her favor, awarding £5,131 in compensation.
- Initial purchase amount: £4,550
- Total awarded: £5,131 (including interest and court fees)
- Judge’s ruling date: August 2025
Judge Vignoli remarked that Harrods did not sufficiently demonstrate that the bracelet was damaged when returned. She expressed skepticism regarding the store’s ability to prove the condition of the bracelet, especially since Ms. Romain had raised concerns about the authenticity of the “pre-inspection video.”
Claims of Damage
During the trial, it was highlighted that Harrods had made no substantial efforts to verify that the bracelet shown in the video was the same one returned by Ms. Romain. Despite the store claiming the bracelet was rendered worthless due to scratches, the judge countered this argument.
“I find their position to be frankly staggering,” Judge Vignoli noted. “Ms. Romain made a reasonable request for evidence, which was flatly refused.”
Conclusion
Ultimately, Romain’s persistence resulted in a victory over Harrods. She expressed relief after the ruling and emphasized that she would avoid shopping at the luxury store in the future. “I’ll go back to saving now, no more spending like this,” she stated, reflecting on her long-held desire to purchase the Cartier bracelet for herself.
