SSE Extends Wind Farm’s Operational Timeline

SSE is taking steps to extend the operational timeline of its Coomatallin wind farm. Located near Dunmanway, this facility has been generating clean energy since early 2006. The company has submitted a planning application to Cork County Council for a 20-year extension, which would allow the wind farm to operate until 2046.

SSE’s Coomatallin Wind Farm Details

  • Location: 7 km south of Dunmanway and 4 km east of Drinagh, Ireland
  • Current Capacity: 6 MW with four turbines
  • Energy Output: Powers over 4,000 homes annually
  • CO2 Reduction: Displaces approximately 4,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions each year
  • Community Contributions: Nearly €2 million allocated to local projects since 2006

The original planning permission for Coomatallin established a lifespan of 20 years from its commissioning. However, SSE is not proposing any changes to the number or size of the turbines in this application.

Economic and Social Impact

Extending the operational life of Coomatallin will not only ensure continued clean energy production but also support local communities economically. SSE has contributed significantly to local projects, including the Irish Community Air Ambulance. Communities within a 20 km radius of the wind farm are eligible to receive funding from SSE.

  • Ciaran Maguire, SSE Renewables: “Coomatallin wind farm has been generating clean, home-grown energy in West Cork since 2006.”
  • Future Contributions: The Coomatallin Community Fund has the potential to distribute nearly €290,000 to local groups by 2025.

Should the planning application receive approval, SSE will continue its commercial rate payments to Cork County Council. This provides vital financial support for local services, including roads and public infrastructure.

Community Benefits

Once the life extension is approved, local initiatives will benefit from ongoing funding. SSE emphasizes that the wind farm’s continued operation will have a lasting positive impact on both the local community and the wider county.
