Government Confirms Taj Mahal’s Name Will Not Change
The Indian government has officially confirmed that there are no plans to change the name of the Taj Mahal. Minister of Culture Gajendra Singh Shekhawat addressed this issue during a session in the Rajya Sabha on Thursday. This statement came in response to queries regarding media reports suggesting a potential name change for the iconic monument.
Government’s Stance on Taj Mahal Name
Gajendra Singh Shekhawat clearly stated, “There is no such idea of changing any name under consideration of the ministry.” This assurance alleviates concerns over any potential alterations to the name of one of the world’s most famous monuments.
Focus on Historical Excavation and Conservation
During the question hour, Shekhawat elaborated on the government’s commitment to historical excavation. He highlighted that the Modi administration has invested significantly more in archaeological projects in the past decade compared to previous years. The minister mentioned that they have spent nearly double the funds on excavation activities over the last ten years versus the preceding decade.
Investment Statistics
- Excavation Funding: The Modi government has allocated nearly double the amount for archaeological excavations since taking office.
- Conservation Expenditure: From 2004 to 2014, Rs 1,310 crore was spent on conservation, whereas Rs 3,713 crore has been spent in the last ten years.
Archaeological Sites in West Bengal
In response to inquiries about archaeological activities in West Bengal, Shekhawat stated that excavation efforts are ongoing and are influenced by available resources. He mentioned that there are currently 135 monuments and archaeological sites in West Bengal acknowledged as of national importance. These sites are managed by the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI), which indicates a continuing focus on heritage preservation in the region.
