Oliver Stone: ‘White Lies’ Nears Reality; Reflects on Career Challenges

Oliver Stone, a renowned filmmaker, has not directed a narrative feature since 2016’s “Snowden.” This marks the longest gap of over ten years in his illustrious career. In early 2024, Stone announced plans for a new ambitious narrative film titled “White Lies.” He signed with Atlas Artists for comprehensive representation to help realize this dream.

Oliver Stone and the Journey of “White Lies”

“White Lies” has been a long-standing project for Stone, with attempts to create it spanning over a decade. In the past, actor Benicio del Toro was attached to the lead role, but the project faced setbacks. Earlier reports indicated the film had fallen apart, but Stone remains optimistic about its potential.

During a recent interview with Variety, coinciding with the 40th anniversary of his iconic film “Platoon,” Stone reflected on “White Lies.” He expressed hope that the film will eventually be produced. He described “White Lies” as a personal story focusing on familial relationships across three generations.

The Plot of “White Lies”

The narrative centers around a character, portrayed by del Toro, who is caught in a cycle of repeating his parents’ mistakes in his own marriage while struggling with his troubled son. Feeling trapped, he embarks on a tumultuous quest for freedom, only to discover deeper personal crises. His encounters with a woman whose life contrasts sharply with his own initiate a transformative journey of self-discovery.

Obstacles and Career Reflections

In 2023, Stone admitted to difficulties in securing financing for his projects, revealing that he felt “blacklisted” from Hollywood. This situation arose mainly from his outspoken views on political issues, particularly his defense of Vladimir Putin and Russia’s actions in Ukraine. In light of the challenges he faced, Stone has decided to refrain from political discussions moving forward.

At 78, Stone believes he has “one more ambitious film” left in him. Production for “White Lies” was initially scheduled to commence in December, with filming locations planned in Thailand and Italy.

Stone’s Legacy

Oliver Stone’s contribution to cinema is significant. From 1986 to 1997, he produced several acclaimed films including:

  • Salvador (1986)
  • Platoon (1987)
  • Wall Street (1987)
  • Born on the Fourth of July (1989)

These films solidified his reputation as a creative force in the industry and contributed to his enduring legacy.

As “White Lies” continues to develop, Stone’s dedication to storytelling remains evident, reflecting both personal and artistic aspirations amidst a complex career landscape.
