Vancouver Man Discovered Dead in Whistler Blackcomb Backcountry

Search-and-rescue teams discovered the body of a 78-year-old man who had been missing near Whistler Blackcomb. Authorities believe he accidentally ventured into the backcountry while skiing alone.

The tragic event began when the man was reported missing on February 28, 2026. He was located on March 5, 2026, in steep terrain south of Piccolo Peak. This area is known for its challenging landscape, situated at an elevation of approximately 1,600 metres.

Brad Sills, the president of Whistler Search and Rescue, stated that the man likely overlooked ski area boundaries, possibly due to poor visibility conditions at the time. “This was a tragic incident of someone skiing alone,” Sills remarked.

Search Efforts

The Whistler Blackcomb Ski Patrol, along with search-and-rescue teams from Whistler, Squamish, and the North Shore, participated in the recovery operation. They utilized specially trained dogs to assist in the search.

Cpl. Katrina Boehmer from Sea to Sky RCMP emphasized the importance of notifying family or friends about outdoor plans. “If you’re skiing alone, it is imperative that you let someone know when you expect to return,” she advised, highlighting the need for timely searches in such situations.

As investigations continue, the police will not release additional details about the deceased man. This event underlines the critical need for awareness and safety when engaging in outdoor recreational activities.
