Kitchener Nightclub Cancels Controversial Comedy Performance

Elements Nightclub in downtown Kitchener has canceled a controversial performance by comedian Ben Bankas. Originally scheduled for Saturday, the show sold out quickly, according to Bankas’ social media accounts. However, the nightclub’s decision to cancel was confirmed by his public relations team.

Background on Ben Bankas

Ben Bankas has been a familiar face in the Kitchener-Waterloo area for the past seven years. Deborah Knight, president of DKPR Public Relations Inc., emphasized his disappointment about not being able to perform for his loyal fans. The performance was initially set to take place at the Conrad Centre for Performing Arts but was shifted to Elements Nightclub following community backlash.

Controversial Comedy Themes

Bankas’ comedy often delves into sensitive topics. Recent performances have touched on issues such as:

  • Residential schools
  • Immigration
  • Diversity
  • Current events in Iran

His approach has attracted both attention and controversy, leading to the cancellation of this and other performances. Knight noted that these cancellations are inconsequential for Bankas, as he continues to perform in various locations across the country.

Future Performances

Despite the setbacks, Knight expressed optimism about Bankas’ future shows. “These cancellations will make his next appearance in the area even bigger,” she stated. The “I Said What I Said” tour faced another cancellation in Nanaimo, B.C., where the venue cited a violation of the Human Rights Code as the reason for not hosting the event.

As the situation unfolds, Bankas looks to reschedule his performances. Knight promised that more information regarding future shows would be available soon. El-Balad has reached out to Elements Nightclub for comments regarding the cancellation but has yet to receive a response.
