Quebec Schools Close for Second Consecutive Day

In response to severe weather conditions, numerous schools across Quebec have closed for a second consecutive day. The decision was announced early on March 12, 2026, by the Centre de services scolaire des Premières-Seigneuries.
School Closures Across Quebec
All educational establishments under the Center are closed today, but unlike the previous day, their childcare services remain operational. Closure affects several other school boards, including:
- Centre de services scolaire de la Capitale
- Centre de services scolaire des Découvreurs
- Centre de services scolaire de Portneuf
- Commission scolaire Central Québec
- Centre de services scolaire de Charlevoix
Childcare services are closed at these institutions, with some exceptions in specific areas.
Private School Closures
Several private schools are also forced to close, including:
- Collège François de Laval
- Collège Jésus-Marie de Sillery
- Collège Stanislas de Québec
- École secondaire François-Bourrin
Regional School Services
In Lévis, the Centre de services scolaire des Navigateurs has opted for closure, yet their childcare services continue to function. Additionally, the Centre de services scolaire des Appalaches is also closed today. Childcare openings include:
- Plein-Soleil
- Étincelle
- Tournesol
- St-Louis
- St-Noël
Schools in the Côte-du-Sud region are closed, including their childcare services.
Cegep and University Updates
In Quebec City, both campuses of Cégep Limoilou and Cégep Champlain St. Lawrence remain open. However, Cégep Garneau has closed its doors for the day. Cégep Sainte-Foy is suspending in-person activities, with some classes shifting online in the morning.
University Laval continues all scheduled activities without interruption.
Power Outages and Weather Warnings
Throughout the region, ongoing power outages have affected many residents. On March 12, Hydro-Québec reported:
- 1,089 customers in Capitale-Nationale without electricity
- 7,348 affected in Chaudière-Appalaches
In the context of the storm, snowfall turned into freezing rain overnight, particularly impacting road conditions in the Bas-Saint-Laurent area. Reduced visibility was reported in many parts of this region.
Weather Advisory
An Environment Canada advisory alerts residents to ongoing freezing rain conditions. They caution about:
- Significant ice accumulation
- Possible transport delays or cancellations
- Increased likelihood of prolonged power outages
Residents are advised to avoid non-essential travel and be cautious of falling ice and branches. Areas such as Charlevoix and eastern Quebec are under a winter storm warning, predicting 15 to 25 centimeters of snowfall with strong winds gusting between 50 and 70 kilometers per hour.
