LRT System Delays Extend to Thursday Due to Overhead Wire Repairs

OC Transpo has announced that delays affecting the LRT system will extend into Thursday morning. These delays are primarily due to ongoing repairs to the overhead wire system after an incident on Wednesday.
LRT System Delays Overview
The delays began after an arcing incident was reported at approximately 12:30 p.m. on Wednesday. The issue halted Line 1 trains at Lees station and disrupted service between uOttawa and Blair. Interim OC Transpo general manager Troy Charter informed city councillors that damage to the overhead catenary system, which powers the LRT network, was observed.
Impact of Severe Weather
These delays are attributed to severe weather conditions, including freezing rain and icy roads, which have caused several service interruptions in Ottawa and the surrounding areas. Charter noted that some trains remain out of service due to the damage.
Ongoing Repairs and Replacement Services
- Rideau Transit Maintenance (RTM) is actively inspecting and repairing the overhead wire system.
- Service interruptions are expected to continue, especially during the morning peak periods.
- OC Transpo has implemented R1 bus service as a replacement between Rideau and Blair stations.
- Additional shuttle bus services are operational between St-Laurent and Cyrville stations.
Charter indicated that there might be further service adjustments as assessments of the overhead catenary system continue.
Previous Issues with Overhead Wires
This is not the first instance where problems with the overhead catenary system have caused disruptions in the LRT network. Notable previous issues include:
- February 2022: A broken wire caused a train to lose power.
- Later in 2022: A lightning strike led to 900 meters of overhead wire being brought down.
- January 2023: Accumulated ice during a storm resulted in multiple system failures, halting LRT service for days.
- February 2024: A train near Lees experienced a power loss due to mechanical issues affecting the pantograph.
As the situation evolves, OC Transpo will provide further updates regarding LRT service and any additional interruptions. Customers are encouraged to check for real-time information on service availability.
