Driver Injured in Summit Township Crash

On Monday afternoon, a serious car crash occurred in Summit Township, resulting in one driver being hospitalized. The incident took place at 4:53 PM at the intersection of 900th Street and 1350th Avenue.
Details of the Summit Township Crash
According to the Effingham County Sheriff’s Office, the collision involved two vehicles. One was operated by 77-year-old Betty Wise from Effingham. She was travelling south on 900th Street and attempted to turn east onto 1350th Avenue.
Meanwhile, a second vehicle, driven by 54-year-old Matthew Jones, was headed northbound on 900th Street. Another car was stationed at a stop sign on the west side of the intersection.
Circumstances Surrounding the Incident
- Wise was reportedly focused on the vehicle at the stop sign.
- She failed to notice Jones’ approaching vehicle.
This oversight led to the collision, causing Wise’s vehicle to spin and land in a ditch on its passenger side. She sustained injuries and was transported by Rural Med EMS to HSHS St. Anthony’s Memorial Hospital in Effingham for treatment. In contrast, Jones declined medical assistance following the incident.
Legal Consequences
Following the crash, Betty Wise was cited for failure to yield the right of way at the intersection. This incident highlights the importance of driver awareness and adherence to traffic signals to prevent accidents.
