Jets Secure QB with Geno Smith Trade from Raiders

In an unexpected move, the New York Jets have re-acquired quarterback Geno Smith from the Las Vegas Raiders. This trade marks Smith’s return to the Jets after nearly a decade away from the team. Sources confirmed that the Jets will send a sixth-round pick in the 2026 draft to the Raiders in exchange for Smith and a seventh-round pick in the same year.

Details of the Trade

The trade was officially confirmed by ESPN’s Adam Schefter. Smith visited the Jets’ facility and successfully passed a physical examination, assuring the Jets of his fitness to play.

Contract Negotiations

To facilitate his return, Smith renegotiated his contract, reducing his salary from $18.5 million to $16.2 million, with the Jets covering the remaining $3.3 million. Altogether, Smith’s new deal will be worth $19.5 million. This contract restructure was essential as the Jets aimed to avoid competition from other teams, notably the Minnesota Vikings, who were reportedly interested in signing him.

Smith’s History with the Jets

Geno Smith initially played for the Jets from 2013 to 2016. He started his career strong, recording 12 wins as a starting quarterback. This total is tied for third-most wins by a Jets quarterback since 2013, a list that includes Sam Darnold and Ryan Fitzpatrick, each with 13 wins.

  • Geno Smith: 12 wins
  • Sam Darnold: 13 wins
  • Ryan Fitzpatrick: 13 wins
  • Zach Wilson: 12 wins

Smith’s tenure with the Jets ended dramatically when he suffered a fractured jaw after a locker room incident. Subsequently, he served as a backup for several teams, including the New York Giants and the Seattle Seahawks.

Recent Performance

Despite experiencing a resurgence in 2022 and 2023 with the Seahawks, where he threw 50 touchdown passes, Smith’s recent performance had seen a decline. He ranked 27th out of 28 qualifying passers in Total QBR and led the NFL in interceptions over the past two seasons.

The Jets’ Future Plans

The Jets are resetting their quarterback depth chart. They are expected to part ways with Justin Fields, who struggled last season. In addition to Smith, the Jets have young quarterbacks Brady Cook and Bailey Zappe under contract. They may also seek to add a veteran backup, possibly Carson Wentz.

Looking ahead, the Jets view Smith as a bridge to future opportunities, especially with the 2027 draft promising talent-rich quarterbacks. They might consider drafting a quarterback in the upcoming draft with picks available at 16th, 33rd, or 44th positions, albeit without using their second overall pick.

Smith’s return to the Jets is seen as a “complete full circle moment.” He expressed enthusiasm about reconnecting with former teammates and building new relationships with fans and the community.
