Canada’s Mboko, Auger-Aliassime, Shapovalov Shine at BNP Paribas Open

Canada’s tennis players are making headlines at the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells, California. Victories from Victoria Mboko, Felix Auger-Aliassime, and Denis Shapovalov have set a promising tone for the tournament.

Victoria Mboko Dominates in Second Round

Victoria Mboko began her campaign in the BNP Paribas Open with a strong performance. The 19-year-old Canadian defeated Australia’s Kimberly Birrell with a score of 6-4, 7-6 (5) on Friday. As the 10th seed, Mboko received a first-round bye before facing the world No. 69.

In the match, Mboko showcased her serving skills, hitting seven aces and breaking her opponent five times. She won 69% of her first-serve points, proving to be a formidable competitor. In contrast, Birrell managed two aces and converted four out of seven break-point chances, securing just 54% of her first-serve points.

Mboko has already shown impressive form this year, reaching finals in Adelaide and Qatar, along with a round of 16 appearance at the Australian Open. She is set to face No. 23 seed Anna Kalinskaya from Russia in her next match.

Felix Auger-Aliassime Prevails in Tight Battle

On the men’s side, Felix Auger-Aliassime continued Canada’s success with a hard-fought victory over Gael Monfils from France. The ninth-seeded Canadian triumphed with scores of 6-7 (5), 6-3, 6-4.

Auger-Aliassime delivered an impressive performance, finishing the match with 14 aces, while also registering 34 winners and 29 unforced errors. Monfils put up a strong fight with 12 aces and 31 winners but could not convert his break-point opportunities effectively.

The Canadian saved two of the five break points he faced and will next meet the winner of the match between 17th-seeded Andrey Rublev and Gabriel Diallo.

Denis Shapovalov Advances with Convincing Win

Denis Shapovalov also progressed in the tournament, defeating No. 29 seed Tomas Martin Etcheverry from Argentina. Shapovalov won the match with scores of 6-3, 2-6, 7-6 (5).

The unseeded player from Richmond Hill, Ontario will now face the tournament’s second seed, Jannik Sinner from Italy, in the upcoming round.
