Coquihalla Highway Reopens Following Multi-Vehicle Crashes Near Merritt and Kamloops

The Coquihalla Highway has reopened following recent multi-vehicle crashes near Merritt and Kamloops. The highway was closed due to unsafe conditions resulting from inclement weather and collisions. DriveBC confirmed that traffic is now flowing in both directions, although drivers should anticipate some delays as the backup eases.

Details of the Accidents

On Sunday afternoon, the Merritt RCMP responded to numerous reports of accidents occurring about five kilometers south of the Helmer Road exit. The closure stretched between Merritt and Kamloops, hampered by perilous road conditions.

Emergency Response

B.C. Emergency Health Services dispatched four ambulances to the scene. They received a call regarding a motor vehicle incident at 1:21 p.m. Three patients were treated at the scene and then transported to the hospital. Their current condition has not been disclosed.

Traffic Disruptions

Many drivers faced significant delays due to the situation. Amanda Horner, traveling with her family, reported being stuck in traffic for over three hours. She noted varying weather conditions along the route, including heavy snowfall, slick roads, and shifting from rain to slush as they headed north.

  • Travel delays exceeded three hours for some drivers.
  • Weather conditions included strong winds and snowfall.
  • Environment and Climate Change Canada issued a weather statement warning of hazardous travel conditions.

As conditions improved, northbound traffic gradually resumed. Truck drivers maneuvered their vehicles to create space for smaller ones, facilitating a smoother flow.

Travelers on the Coquihalla Highway should remain cautious and heed weather updates, especially during winter months when conditions can change rapidly.
