Human-Caused Fire Damages Saskatoon’s University Bridge Again

The Saskatoon Fire Department is currently investigating a recent fire that disrupted traffic on the University Bridge. This incident marks the fourth blaze under the bridge in four years, with firefighters extinguishing the flames on Sunday afternoon. The fire caused significant damage, melting a plastic sewage pipe located beneath the bridge.
Details of the Incident
A news release from city hall stated that the fire was “human-caused” without providing specific details. Fortunately, the bridge has been declared structurally sound, and all four lanes of traffic have been reopened as of Monday. However, a sewage pump remains in place in the westbound lane, causing ongoing traffic delays at the east end of the bridge.
Sewage Spill Impact
The melted sewage pipe led to the spillage of sewage onto the ground near Spadina Crescent, which subsequently entered a storm sewer pipe that drains into the South Saskatchewan River. The cleanup of frozen sewage is currently underway.
Concerns Over Homeless Activity
Brendan Lemke, the city’s director of water and waste operations, expressed concern regarding access to the area under the bridge. He noted, “Where there’s a will, there’s a way,” emphasizing challenges in preventing unauthorized access. Despite the installation of barbed wire atop the fences, the area continues to see homeless activity.
- The walkway on the north side of the bridge will remain closed temporarily for a new sewer line installation.
- Homeless encampments have been linked to past fires under the bridge.
- A blanket was spotted near the melted sewer pipe, suggesting habitation in the area.
Prior Incidents
If connected to a homeless encampment, Sunday’s fire would be the fourth related incident beneath the 110-year-old bridge. This structure accommodates around 35,800 vehicles daily. The city has faced challenges with similar events in the past:
| Date | Damage | Description |
|---|---|---|
| January 2025 | $90,000 | Fire from homeless encampment; closed for two days. |
| October 2024 | Unknown | Fire attributed to encampment. |
| June 2023 | Unknown | Fire attributed to encampment. |
Future Precautions
Lemke described the latest fire as “suspicious.” There are currently no surveillance systems installed to monitor the area under the bridge. Decisions regarding enhanced security measures would need the approval of the city council.
The ongoing pattern raises significant concerns about safety and security in areas housing vulnerable populations. The city continues to seek solutions to prevent future incidents under the University Bridge.
