Colts’ Defensive End Kwity Paye Departs for Las Vegas amid Unmet Hopes

Kwity Paye, former defensive end for the Indianapolis Colts, is moving to Las Vegas. The Raiders have confirmed the signing of Paye on a three-year contract valued at $48 million, with $32 million guaranteed. This decision follows the Raiders’ recent trade of star defensive end Maxx Crosby to the Baltimore Ravens for two first-round picks.
Kwity Paye’s NFL Journey
Paye, drafted as the 21st overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft, has been a steady starter in the league. Over five seasons, he amassed 30.5 career sacks. His performance peaked with 8.5 sacks in 2023 and a matching total in 2024. Despite this, he struggled to evolve into the dominant pass rusher expected by the Colts.
Expectations vs. Reality
The Colts viewed Paye as an elite edge rusher due to his impressive athleticism at over 260 pounds. However, he recorded only 10.5 sacks during his college career at Michigan. Indianapolis General Manager Chris Ballard believed Paye could develop further in the NFL, yet this potential largely went unfulfilled.
- Career Stats:
- 30.5 career sacks
- 8.5 sacks in 2023
8 sacks in 2024
- 74 starts at defensive end
Paye often found success as a second-effort rusher, relying on disengaging from blockers to chase quarterbacks. Unfortunately, his performance diminished when key player DeForest Buckner was sidelined. In the eight games Buckner played, Paye recorded three sacks and six quarterback hits. Following Buckner’s injury, he managed just one sack and three hits in the remaining games.
Impact of Paye’s Departure
The Colts have begun to address their defensive line needs by signing veteran Arden Key in free agency. However, Paye’s exit creates a significant gap in the starter lineup. The franchise must find a capable pass rusher to complement Buckner and recent first-round pick Laiatu Latu, who led the team with 8.5 sacks the previous season.
Paye’s move to Las Vegas signifies both an opportunity and a challenge. While he aims to rekindle his career, the Colts face a decision regarding their defensive strategy. With the need for an impactful edge rusher more pressing than ever, Indianapolis must navigate their upcoming moves carefully.
